            A school is an educational institution designed to provide learning spaces and learning environments for the teaching of students under the direction of teachers. ....................................

A school profile provides an overview on the important information about school's demographics, curriculum and grading system. Here in this profile we make an overview of St.Joseph Higher Secondary School, Chengal. It is a private aided school established in the year 1915. This school is affiliated with Kerala state board for both secondary and higher secondary School.

1.1. Location of the School

The school situated on the bank of Periyar river, near Kalady-the birth place of Sree Sankaracharya the exponent of Advaitha philosophy. It is a rural area of Ernakulam district of Kerala, India. The aerial distance of school from Kalady town or the MC road is just 400 meters. 2 km away from international airport and 6 km away from Angamaly town and railway station. The international pilgrim centre of Malayattoor is 12 km away from the school.

1.2. About the School

            Dispelling the darkness of ignorance and spreading the light of knowledge, the temple of knowledge, St.Joseph G.H.S Chengal stepping towards with great enthusiasm. The Higher Secondary section has its humble beginning in 2015 which is owned, managed and maintained by C.M.C Sisters the first indigenous congregation for women in Kerala founded by saint Chavara Kuriakose Elias the grate missionary of the time. The Christian formation of the people especially the women and children are the charism of the congregation and the education is the main apostolate cherishing the memories of the forgone days dancing with the rhythm, of Periyar. This great grandma continuous to illumine the minds and hearts with knowledge and empower the young ones with strong congregation and values. Now the higher secondary school has altogether 240 students in plus one and plus two, 12 staff for teaching and 2 non-teaching staff.  In secondary level there is 2120 students, 56 teaching staff and 7 non-teaching staff.

The selfless and dedicated service of staff, serious co-operation of the parents and the efficient and creative ample response in their response both in curricular, co-curricular activities, and keep up the name and fame of the institution the able and the dynamic personality of our present principal Sr Nybi Joseph created a new spirit in the development and flourishing of the school. Keeping hold of the hands of god almighty, the school seeking the new horizons of knowledge….

1.2.1 The Principal

            Principal oversees all higher-level operations in a HS school. Sr. Nybi Joseph continues to be the principal from the beginning onwards. Her selfless service and hard work enable the school to continuous success. She creates a safe learning environment and set performance goals both for students and teachers, and oversee the process so that those goals are attained.

1.2.2 The Staff

            This school consists of 12 teaching staff and two non-teaching staff. The teachers are the directly responsible persons of student’s education. Teachers meet parents several times per year to talk about their student’s progress.

1.2.3 Parents Teachers Association (PTA)

            PTA is a formal organization composed of parents and teachers that is intended to facilitate parental participation in a school. The common PTA is conducted thrice a year. The first meeting of PTA in this school is called within one month after completion of Plus One admission. Mr. Davis Ainiyadan is the president, and Miss Sonu Vincent is the secretary of the PTA. The PTA always put their effort to make the administration of the school to be smooth every year.

1.3 Vision of the School

            To bring forth intellectually creative, emotionally matured, morally responsible, spiritually enlightened, socially committed and truly liberated youngsters, who play a vital role for the transformation of society and nation.

1.8 School Emblem

The school emblem consists of a book, a lighted lamp and a stem of Lilly. The open book symbolises learning and knowledge. Stem of Lilly portrays integrity. The lighted lamp symbolises wisdom.

1.9 History

            The school has several decades of history to tell, the history of ups and downs, pains and gains. A Convent was established in the name of saint Germain at Chengal for the stay of CMC Sisters 1906. In the same year a boarding for girls was started attached to the convent. This boarding was visited by Mr. F.S Davis, the education Director of Kochi and well pleased with the functioning. He allowed a grant for a school building. The sisters toiled day and night and the LP section started 1910-11 academic year meant for both boys and girls. In 1915 it was upgraded as upper primary school. But because of some administration reasons the UP school had shifted to Kanjoor. By the grace of God, again it was allowed to continue the UP section and 1963 UP School upgraded as high school. From 1963 to 1983 it was functioned as an unaided High School.

In 1983, the support and recommendation of Sri M.V Mani M.L.A of Angamaly, and Education minister P.J Joseph, the long awaiting desire become frightful; the school was upgraded as an aided High School. In 1992 a Parallel English Medium was started along with Malayalam. Since 2002 an unaided higher secondary school is functioning very effectively and in 2015 it was approved as an aided school. Now it goes on as a reputed institution with a unique identity.

1.11 Facilities of the School

            St. Joseph H.S has fully furnished building with 4 Class rooms, Library, Science Labs, Computer Labs, prayer room and auditorium. It has a playground for sports and other outdoor activities. Newly build basketball court is an ample ardency for the significance given to the co-curricular activities. The school provides purified drinking water facility, separate toilets and washrooms to boys and girls. In order to solve the storage of water there is a rain water resource.

1.11.1 Classrooms

            There are four fully furnished class rooms for two batches of bio-maths and commerce students. Each classroom are smart ones. Two doors, four windows, enough tube lights, fans, lot of space, big blackboards, floor is tiled etc. makes the class room sufficient.

1.11.2 Lab facilities

            There are computer lab and science lab. These labs are so spacious and well arranged. Sufficient computers and Wi-Fi which meets the demand of students according to the standards. In science lab, various devices of physics, components of chemistry, specimens for zoology and bottony are kept there. Students can do various experiments and observation in labs.

1.11.3 Library

            Library consists of thousands of books. Students can read comfortably in the library and also can keep in hand. The books and seat arrangements are systematically. It also provides newspapers and magazines to students.

1.11.4 Auditorium

            To develop various talents of students a furnished auditorium is functioning in school. Indoor games, cultural events, celebrations, common classes, open assembly etc. are conducted in the auditorium. It consists of a stage, curtain, podium, chairs and built-in speakers.

1.11.5 Play Ground

            It has a playground for sports and other outdoor activities. Newly build basketball court is an ample ardency for the significance given to the co-curricular activities. Concrete bunches are also seen in the sides of playground for watching games.

1.11.6 Staff room

            The school provides a comfortable spacious staffroom for teachers. Separate tables and chairs provided for each teacher.

1.11.7 Office room

            A well-furnished and organised office room give a strut to the school. It consists of principal’s cabin, office staff cabin and a parlour. It is big in size and looking beautiful.

1.11.8 Garden

            An ideal school environment embraces a beautiful garden which provides students a real-time look at how green is grown. There is herbal garden containing so many herbals which inherited medicinal value of plants. There is also flower garden and fruits garden. Students can spend interval time in this ozone zone. The campus of whole school is eco-friendly and filled with trees, plants and flowers.

1.11.9 Drinking water

            School provides two water coolers with purifier for pure mineral water to avoid dehydration of students. These coolers are attached to several taps in different places with steel glasses to drink easily without making queue. The water is from the school well which is carefully maintained.

1.11.10 Rain water harvesting

            To solve the water scarcity in school, there is a huge rain water harvesting tank is maintained. This water is mainly used for watering plants and in toilet flesh tanks.

1.11.11 Waste management

            Waste management includes the processes and actions required to manage waste from its inception to its final disposal. As a part of suchitwa mission and cleanliness waste collection bins are maintained. The bins are separated with food waste, plastics and papers. The plastics are collected handed over to Haritha workers and food waste is kept in compost dig and used as manure to plants.

1.11.12 Sick room

            School provides sick rooms for boys and girls separately. In the room students get medicines, first aid and can rest in bed.

1.11.13 Prayer room

            There is prayer hall in the school building and a chapel near by for praying. Students can spend a half an hour in the prayer hall after lunch and also visit chapel in the beginning and end of class. The first Friday of every month there is holy mass for Christian students, others can also join.

1.11.14 Counselling facility

            The primary motive behind counseling at school level is to address the emotional, social and behavioural needs of the students. And to create a seamless and friendly environment to help each one of them with different approaches. The school arrange counselling facilities when the students needed.

            The school provides modern separate toilet and washroom facilities to boys and girls. They kept washrooms are so neat and clean. The management arranged a cleaning staff for this.

 

1.12 School Activities

1.12.1 School Assembly

            The school assembly is generally conducted in the morning before the classes begin for the students. It is a meeting, association, or gathering of all for the purpose of special programming or information dissemination. In this school two types of assembly-open assembly and classroom assembly. Open assembly is for all at auditorium on Wednesdays. Other days class room assembly is arranged with sound system. Each class room has separate speakers and the initiative of that day conduct the assembly. Students sing a common hymn of prayer together, as well as to hear shared announcements. The assembly is conducted to give all the students a chance to showcase their abilities. Generally, different classes get a chance to conduct the assembly per week. The whole process is also divided into various other parts like a moral value thought, thought of the day, news reading, pledge, national anthem etc. In special days there will be celebrations. After the dispersal of assembly students enter the class by marching.

1.12.2 Sports

            Physical education is one of the scholastic subjects in school. Like languages and other subjects Health and Physical Education is compulsory academic subject. Therefore, there is a PT class for each batch to promote the sportsman spirit and co-operation among students. PT refreshes the students from monotonous of the class. For this, both indoor games and out door games are arranged. Teachers are also preparing students for various sports and games for the competitions from school level to higher levels. The school conduct a sports day for the selection of best sports candidate to higher levels. In school level, the best performers are awarded.

1.12.3 Arts

            The purpose of the Celebration of the Arts Day is to highlight students' creative ambition and drive and to give them a chance to showcase their hard work and talents. Like sports day, there is also arts day in this school. For this day, the students are participated in different arts competition and awarded in this day. The winners get chance to participate next level of sub district to national level.

1.12.4 Evening class

            Student who want more concentration and special care in studies are participated in evening class. The teachers of different subject alternatively took the class from 4pm to 5.30 pm.

1.12.4 Guidance and awareness classes

            The school provides different motivational classes of career guidance, road safety, first aid, value education classes and other awareness classes of different resource persons.

1.12.4 School Calendar

            The calendar depicts the yearly planning of the school. The different activities, programmes, events, exams etc. are mentioned in the calendar. Teachers and students plan them according to the dates of the calendar.

1.12.5. Master Timetable

            It is a consolidated timetable helpful for the principal to supervise the teachers. This timetable helps the principal or HM (Head of the school) to swap classes or re-allocate teachers according to unforeseen events like the leave of a teacher or unavailability of a classroom.

1.13 Plus-two Result

            By the hard work of teachers and students every year the school secured 100% success.

Last year this school secured 25 A+ holders and 21 5A+ holders out of 120 students of +2 bio-maths and commerce. Teachers and students’ efforts became a great success.

 

 

1.14 Co-curricular Activities

            As a co-curricular activity different day celebration are conducted, such as Teachers day, Basheer day, chadrayan day, Reading day, patron’s day, commerce day, science day etc. In connection with different competitions like quiz programme, debate, speech, group song, skit competition, decoration, street play etc. are arranged. This encourage students to actively participate in competitions.

 

1.15 Various Clubs and Forums

1.15.1 Science Club

            The science club was started with an aim to develop interest among students in Science, to introduce them to a variety of scientific disciplines and to develop skills in students.

Objectives:

  • To arouse and cultivate students’ interest in learning science.
  • Enable students to carry out self-directed activities in areas of interest in science.
  • Provide opportunities for students to develop novel ideas and initiatives.

An active science club is functioning in this school, the club members conducted awareness classes, Seminars, chandrayan day, competitions in relation with science day etc.

1.15.2. Commerce club

            Commerce club serves as a platform to give students awareness about the current business world, various trade activities and challenges faced by the corporate world. It provides a platform for students to exhibit their talents in various commerce-oriented events and also help them to enhance their analytical and decision-making skills. These activities enable them to perform outstandingly well in team work and in creative endeavours. The members of the club engage themselves in various activities like poster making, brochure writing, treasure hunting expeditions, group discussions, debates, and discussions. These activities and competitions help them to improve their proficiency in academic and creative writing, communication skills and also contribute to their overall personality development.

1.15.3 Souhrida Club

Souhrida club is very actively engaged in the school. The aim of the Club is to improve the physical, academic, social and interpersonal skills of the adolescents and lead them towards a successful adulthood. Souhrida Club assures a platform for the students to express their problems frankly. Privacy and transparency are two key factors of Souhrida Club.

The objectives of the Souhrida Club are enabling self-development and empowerment of Adolescents, spread awareness among them about health, hygiene, nutrition, Adolescent Reproductive and Sexual Health, and family and child care; upgrade their home-based skills and life skills.

1.15.3.1 Drop Box

In connection with Souhrida club a Drop Box is arranged at school for students to drop their grievances / problems in their home, class or any other area. The Drop Box should be placed in the school at a place which is easily accessible to all students. There should also be facilities for students to use Drop Box unnoticed by other students or staff members. Co-ordinator in the presence of the principal should open the Drop Box on every Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays. Grievances/problems of the student received from drop box should be entered in a register with date and signature of the Principal and Co-ordinator. Principal should ensure that the problems raised by the students through Drop Box are not discussed openly among the staff and students. Action should be taken to find solution for the issues raised by the students through drop box. Action Taken on the issues should also be noted in the Register.

1.15.4 National Service Scheme (NSS)

            National Service Scheme is a student-centered programme and it is complementary to education. It is a noble experiment in academic extension. It inculcates the spirit of voluntary work among students and teachers through sustained community interaction. It brings our academic institutions closer to the society. It is a link between the campus and community, and knowledge and action.  The overall aim of NSS is the Personality Development of students through community service. The student’s members of the school very actively engaged in this scheme and conduct many voluntary programmes to society like food sharing, house renovation, road and pond cleaning etc.

 1.15.5 The Bharat Scout and Guides

            Scouting and Guiding - which is an international movement - intends to inculcate in the boys and girls a spirit of loyalty, patriotism and thoughtfulness for others. In India, Scouting and Guiding is immensely popular among the school students. The scout and guiding students actively do their activities during different functions of school, their hospitality is appreciable. They are arranging and coordinating activities.

1.15.6 Alumni Association

            The relationship makes the life more beautiful and memories makes it tastier. One of the main purposes of alumni associations is to support a network of former students who will, in turn, help to raise the profile of the school. As a former student, he/she always keep a clause watch on school’s growth and continues to be in touch with its activities. Every two year this school conduct alumni gathering in the month of May. The batches of different years also gathered in the school as a batch gathering.

1.16 School Records and Registers

            The school very systematically keep the different records and registers in a shelf arranged for it and it is easily accessible without hindrance. The various records and registers kept in the school are Service book, log book, admission register, salary register, teacher’s attendance register, pupil’s attendance register, financial records, stock register and so on.

1.18 Conclusion

                School induction programme for B.Ed students is for knowing the school as a whole Through the School Induction Programme I got to know the school. I can say that this school is really a school in all means. Here students grow not just in size, not even in knowledge, but in curiosity, courage, confidence, independence, resourcefulness, resistance, patience, competence, and understandings.

            St. Joseph HS School is managing the steady progress in every sphere of education from its very beginning onwards. The school envisages imparting value-based quality education in excellence amongst its learners. Excellence, has always been its hallmark of St. Joseph school in all its activities. The campus, buildings, classrooms, labs, library, auditorium etc. have been set up in such a manner to provide the best facilities to mold future citizens. The school provides quality education to children without any discrimination on the basis of class, caste, creed, sex etc. This school provides better education for students in addition to educational training. It also gives training in arts and sports. School gives importance to academic subject as well as co-curricular activities. It is an integral part of the people living in and around this school. St. Joseph School has a legacy of training, best men and women for the society and country.

1.19 Reflective Journal

Description

As a part of B.Ed curriculum we were required to make a profile about the school, where we will be doing our school induction program. I made the school profile of St. Joseph High Secondary School, Chengal. I collected details and photos of school during my induction period.

Feelings

Teachers and students in St. Joseph HS School very much co-operative to me. They were happy to include me in their activities and kind enough to share their experiences in the school. I was very happy to go to that school for my induction program.

 

Evaluation

It was a new experience for me to prepare a school profile. The school profile gives me an overall view about the school. It was always easy to get the data from the school and preparing school profile gave an idea about how the school functions. It was as positive experience in and around the school

Analysis

St Joseph Higher Secondary School has been in its peak in academic performances. The success is on a result of the teachers who have been taking all the efforts to create such a success. It is one of the well-known educational institution in the locality.

 

Action Plan

The aim of this practical was to know more about school functioning and about what is the role of a teacher in the school. This school profile is used to getting the basic the school. It is through a school profile that one can understand the vision and mission of the education. Therefore, it is very much necessary to have a school profile for a teacher to fulfil all requirements as a teacher.
